Misconceptions of Paganism

By Andy Sampson
Persuasive Essay written for High School English class, April, 1999.
Grade Received: A

In English Class we were required to write a persuasive essay using a certain criteria. A couple weeks before, a person in my class happened to see The Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland and asked me if I worshipped the devil. When I told him no, he asked all the questions that eventually turned derogatory. That is when I found it appropriate to use this subject.

When you think of Witchcraft, what comes to mind? Many people would say things like Halloween, green faces, old hags flying on broomsticks, devil worship, black-robed outfits with pointed black hats, black magick, etc. Really, none of those things apply to witchcraft, also known as Wicca, one of many pagan religions that are taken to be satanic. For this reason, Christians should be educated about the misconceptions of pagan religions.

One reason Christians should be educated about the misconceptions of pagan religions is because they are different that what they are perceived to be. Wicca is taken by many to be devil worship. Fictitious movies like Hocus Pocus tell how witches sell their souls to the devil. In all actuality, Wicca is a nature-based religion, in which a god and a goddess are presented to represent the polarity of the world, be it man to woman, left to right, or good to bad. Nowhere in the religion is there anything about Satanism or Demonism. Matter of fact, there are no all evil or all good deities such as the devil in Wicca. Mistaking Paganism for Satanism makes pagans upset. How would you feel if lies were spread about your religion?

Another reason Christians should be educated about the misconceptions of pagan religions is because a lot of pagans feel incriminated by non-pagans. Name-calling and religious slurs are given like candy is given to children at Neenah High School. I have been told that I don't deserve Christmas and that I am going to burn in hell, to say the least. There are also various hate web sites. Although not all of these are anti-pagan sites, many are. USA Weekend states there are approximately 250 hate web sites. I have stumbled over many myself. How would you react if you found a web site telling you your religion is wrong?

Informing Christians about Paganism would eliminate the image of a witch as a green hag riding a broom into the night while performing black magic. Also in this educating, most of the cruelties towards pagans will decrease. The world would will be more livable for pagans and non-pagans alike.
